A woman was rescued from her car after it became trapped in flood water in Cornwall late last night, prompting fire service warnings about driving in such conditions.
Cornwall: A woman got stuck in her car in flood water. This happened near Menheniot, about two and a half miles southeast of Liskeard. The fire service was called late last night.
Firefighters arrived around 11:30 PM. They found her car stranded in two to three feet of water. Thankfully, they were able to rescue her safely.
The fire service is warning everyone to avoid driving through flood water. They remind drivers to be extra careful at night when visibility is low.
Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said that every year, people lose their lives in similar situations. They urge drivers to never attempt to cross flood water without knowing its depth.
Even a small amount of standing water can float many cars. Fast-moving water is even more dangerous. Just 30 cm of flowing water can sweep a car away.
Roads may be damaged beneath the water, making them unsafe. Always heed road closed signs and inform the police if you encounter impassable roads.
Lastly, don’t assume fords are safe just because the road isn’t closed. Always check the river level and use common sense.
