Cornwall: The council is spending more money on car park payment machines. Just weeks ago, they spent £18,000 replacing machines in three car parks after only five years.

Now, they plan to switch six more car parks back to pay and display systems. This decision has upset many taxpayers.

The car parks affected include Millpool in Looe, St Georges Road and The Manor in Newquay, Harbour and Trenwith in St Ives, and Island in St Ives.

A spokesperson said they would notify people about the changes with signs at the car parks. They want everyone to pay correctly when parking.

Since the announcement, over 100 comments appeared on Facebook, mostly against the decision. Many feel it’s a waste of money.

Some residents expressed frustration. They noted the barriers took a long time to install and now they’re being removed. They question why the council didn’t consult the public before making this change.

The council explained their reasons. They said feedback showed barrier systems weren’t accessible for everyone. There were also safety concerns and frequent technical issues with the barriers.

They mentioned that technology has improved. Now, drivers can extend parking sessions remotely through JustPark, which also offers discounts for regular users.
