A Truro shopkeeper has taken matters into his own hands, making citizen’s arrests to combat shoplifting, which has surged to record levels across the UK.
Truro: A shopkeeper is tackling shoplifting head-on. Martin Gaunt, who runs Happy Piranha, is frustrated with rising theft rates and police inaction. He’s made over 50 citizen’s arrests this year, cutting theft in his shop by 80%.
Shoplifting in the UK hit a staggering £2.2 billion last year. Martin believes that retailers and police are not doing enough to deter thieves. He says removing security measures invites crime.
While his shop is safer, he notes that thieves are just moving to other stores. Larger shops are cutting back on security, leaving smaller shops vulnerable. Martin feels this creates a perfect storm for crime.
He believes that confronting shoplifters is necessary. Although some question his right to make arrests, he feels it’s justified. He suggests that fines and community orders could be more effective than imprisonment.
Martin emphasizes the need for more police presence in towns. He warns that doing nothing sends a message that stealing is acceptable. He wants to see action taken to protect local businesses.
