A couple in Cornwall found a 10ft painting of Jesus in their barn, created over 70 years ago. They are now seeking more information about the artwork’s history.
The barn was filled with fiberboard sheets. While moving them, they discovered the painting behind one sheet. It shows Jesus on the cross, possibly with Mary and John.
Sarah, a former arts teacher, was excited. She said, “I just said ‘Jesus!’ when I saw it.” The painting is mostly in good condition, with only a little mold and some cracks.
The artwork features Jesus beardless and in a plain white cloth. On one side, there’s a woman in blue, likely Mary, and on the other, a man in dark colors.
At first, Sarah thought it looked like art from Newlyn in the 1920s and 1930s. Later, she found a faint signature on the back: Teresa Fuller, 1951-1952.
Sarah is curious about the artist and has asked for help to learn more. To protect the painting, they moved it to St Bartholomew’s Church in Lostwithiel.
Sarah hopes the church will keep it safe and that locals can help with its history. She hasn’t reached the previous owners yet but is eager to find a good home for the painting.
She’s excited about the journey ahead and the people she might meet. Sarah studied art history and has a background in painting and ceramics.
