Stockport reveals its development blueprint, guiding future growth with a focus on community, heritage, and sustainable living.
The town shared its future plans this week. This plan is a design blueprint and a guide for developers. The 160-page guide shows how the town should look and how it should feel during development.
The guide protects the town’s skyline. New buildings must fit around old buildings, such as the town hall. Creating parks receives focus, and open spaces and pedestrian-friendly streets matter. Homes must be spacious and filled with sunlight.
Town leaders want shared community spaces and they desire “rich green infrastructure.” Car parks must blend into the town and should fit into communal courtyards. Streets need furniture and public art. This encourages activity beyond just travel.
Planit and 5Plus Architects created the guide. Community feedback shaped the design’s outcome and public consultation was vital to that end.
Council leader Mark Hunter thinks the guide is important as it helps Stockport become a great place. He wants it to become a better area to work, thrive, and live. New projects must have high quality, and sustainable communities are his goal. These communities show the town’s bold vision.
Planit’s Caleb Jones agrees that homes are key while urban living demand grows significantly. Protecting heritage is important as a clean, green area is desirable. This future will make people love Stockport.
