Sainsbury’s is switching to paper packaging for its Ripe and Ready Avocados in 77 stores. This change aims to cut down plastic waste significantly.
Birmingham: Sainsbury’s is making a big change in 77 of its UK stores. They’re switching to paper packaging for their Ripe and Ready Avocados twin pack. This is a step towards reducing plastic waste.
This change will save about 20.2 million pieces of plastic each year. The trial is happening now, and a wider rollout is planned for later this year.
Claire Hughes, the Director of Product and Innovation, shared that this switch is part of their commitment to a greener future. They want customers to enjoy the new packaging.
Sainsbury’s is also known for being the first UK retailer to use cardboard for its own-brand mushrooms. This change saves over 775 tonnes of plastic annually.
The new cardboard trays are fully recyclable. They help customers use less plastic and recycle more at home. This is the largest single removal of plastic in Sainsbury’s groceries so far.
Ms. Hughes emphasized their goal to reduce plastic packaging across their products. They’re excited about the new cardboard punnets for mushrooms and are working with suppliers to increase recycled content.
