Cornwall has seen 25 bank closures in three years, with more expected in 2025. The trend reflects a nationwide shift towards cashless banking.
Cornwall: Over the past three years, 25 banks have closed in Cornwall. More closures are expected in 2025. This trend is part of a larger shift across the UK.
Since 2022, more than 1,600 banks have shut down in the UK. This includes over 100 closures already planned for this year. In Cornwall, three more banks are set to close soon.
For example, Lloyds in Liskeard will close in February, followed by Lloyds in Newquay in March, and another in Wadebridge in July. The TSB in Bude is also on the list, but the closure date is still unknown.
Falmouth has lost four banks, while Wadebridge and Liskeard each lost three. The pace of closures is not slowing down.
By the end of January, 35 banks will have closed or are scheduled to close. In 2025 alone, around 120 branches have already shut or announced their closure plans.
Last year, over 400 banks closed, with more than 600 in 2023 and over 100 in 2022. Since February 2022, 1,649 branches have closed or announced closures, averaging about 44 per month.
The LINK initiative was created to assess the impact of these closures. Major banks like Barclays and HSBC are involved in this effort to help vulnerable customers.
When a community loses its bank, banking hubs or free ATMs are set up to help. The closures are affecting all parts of the UK, with over 1,300 in England alone.
Age UK warns that the loss of face-to-face banking could leave many elderly people without essential services. They are calling for better access to physical banking options.

Cat Farrow from Cash Access UK mentioned that they are working on opening more banking hubs. The first hub opened in December, and more are expected this year.
