A speeding driver, Mohammed Irshad, killed a retired nurse in a head-on crash. He was jailed for ten and a half years.
Irshad drove a Mercedes very fast and tried to overtake another car, driving into oncoming traffic. Karen and Kenneth Kimblin were in a Nissan traveling toward the town center. A judge called it a ‘catastrophic collision,’ which happened on June 22 last year.
Karen Kimblin died from her injuries. She was 63 years old, had four children and seven grandchildren. She was a nurse who helped others.
After his arrest, Irshad seemed uncaring and asked police if he caused the death. The judge said Irshad downplayed his actions.
Irshad pleaded guilty in court to causing death by dangerous driving and serious injuries by driving too. The court jailed him for ten and a half years, also banning him from driving for 12 years.
Irshad had cocaine in his system two days before the crash. The court thinks his driving was ‘furious,’ even though St Helens Road had a 30mph speed limit and was a busy road with traffic.
Irshad had a passenger who was also hurt. Irshad drove erratically and aggressively at between 49mph and 65mph near the crash site, leading the judge to believe he drove much faster.
Irshad overtook a Toyota car, making other drivers swerve, and drove into the path of oncoming cars. The Kimblins could not avoid the crash. The Nissan flipped and hit a wall, with three pedestrians nearby. Mr. Kimblin suffered serious injuries, already missing a limb.
Mr. Kimblin feared for his wife’s life and now feels lonely without her. One daughter was pregnant at the time and lost her mom because of Irshad.
Irshad ignored the traffic laws and drove double the speed limit. Irshad had past convictions for violence.
Mrs. Kimblin’s family mourned their loss as she devoted her life to helping people and deeply loved her family.
