A Coventry shop was fined after inspectors found a serious infestation of mice and cockroaches, leading to a temporary closure due to health risks.
Inspectors visited in February 2024 after complaints about rotten produce. They discovered the pests during an unannounced food hygiene check.
The shop’s operator, Mr. Diyar Kadar, agreed to close the business voluntarily. He took steps to treat the pest issue and clean the premises.
After ensuring no pests remained, the shop reopened in March. Inspectors found improved conditions and no signs of infestation.
Mr. Kadar admitted he hadn’t realized the extent of the problem. He mentioned family issues kept him from spending enough time at the shop.
In court, he pleaded guilty to not controlling pests and keeping the premises clean. He was fined £3,280 for these violations.
Local officials stressed the importance of food safety in businesses. They encouraged residents to report any hygiene concerns to the council.
The council aims to work with businesses to improve conditions but will take action if health risks are present.
