Coventry: Drivers in Coventry have paid over £4 million in bus lane fines. That’s a lot of money! Since 2020, nearly 180,000 penalties have been issued.

The data shows that Hales Street at the Burges junction has the highest number of fines. A total of 54,824 penalties were issued there. This bus gate has made over £1.2 million since it opened in July 2023.

Hales Street (Whittle Arch) follows closely with over 51,000 fines. Warwick Road also saw more than 39,000 fines during the same period. Other roads like Gosford Street and Tile Hill Lane have also caught drivers out.

Coventry City Council says these bus gates are meant to improve road safety. They want to make the roads safer for everyone.

A spokesperson from Breakwells Transport mentioned that unclear signage can confuse drivers. They advise everyone to be aware of the routes they take.

Coventry City Council added that bus lane enforcement cameras are common in many UK cities. They introduced these cameras in 2011. Currently, there are six bus gates in Coventry where these cameras operate.

The Hales Street/Burges bus gate was added to help reduce traffic and improve air quality. It also aims to make bus journeys faster and more reliable.

Drivers who receive fines can appeal to an independent service if they believe the fine was unfair.
