Cornwall: Households in Cornwall are really making waves when it comes to council tax reductions. They’ve had the most success in the whole country! Over 200 homes managed to lower their bills, which is pretty impressive.

If you think your home is in the wrong council tax band, you can appeal. Just reach out to the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), and they’ll look into it for you. But be careful! Sometimes, your band can go up instead of down.

Between April 2023 and March 2024, Cornwall saw 750 appeals. Almost half of those didn’t change anything, but 220 households got their bands reduced. That’s a win for them!

Not everyone had the same luck, though. Some folks ended up with higher bands after appealing. In fact, 10 households in the South West faced that situation. Overall, there were 43,820 appeals across England and Wales during the same period.

Some areas did better than others. In places like Rossendale and Rushmoor, two-thirds of appeals led to reductions. Meanwhile, in Hounslow, only 5% of appeals were successful. Quite a difference!

So, if you’re in Cornwall and thinking about appealing, you’re in good company. Just remember to weigh your options carefully before making a move!
