Cornwall Council is set to discuss a motion urging the National Trust to convert holiday properties into long-term homes to address the housing crisis.
Cornwall: The National Trust is in the spotlight. A motion is coming up at Cornwall Council. It suggests using holiday properties as long-term homes. This could help with the housing crisis.
Right now, about 27,000 people are waiting for homes in Cornwall. The area has around 10,000 council houses and 22,000 housing association homes. Plus, there are 8,000 families in temporary housing.
Interestingly, Cornwall has over 24,000 holiday lets. That number has jumped by 30% in just five years. There are also more than 13,000 second homes registered.
Independent councillor Julian German is pushing this motion. He wants the council to reach out to the National Trust. The idea is to ask them to use suitable holiday properties as long-term rentals.
Julian points out that the National Trust has over 100 holiday lets in Cornwall. He believes they can help people find homes. After all, everyone needs a place to live to thrive.
He also thinks the National Trust can set an example for other landlords. Not every property will work for long-term rentals, but this could make a difference.
The council meeting is set for January 21. They’ll also discuss safety improvements for a dangerous junction and other local issues.
