Truro: A care home that was once struggling is now celebrating a big win. Carrick, located in Playing Place, was rated inadequate by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) last July.

Back then, the home, which supports autistic individuals and those with learning disabilities, was put in special measures. They weren’t providing a safe environment or proper training for staff.

Fast forward a year, and things have changed dramatically. Carrick is now rated ‘good’ in all areas after a recent inspection in November. This turnaround is thanks to Salutem Care and Education, which took over from Spectrum.

Salutem jumped right in with a turnaround plan to boost care standards. Ann Holt, a director at Salutem, expressed pride in the team’s hard work. She emphasized their commitment to creating a safe and supportive space for residents.

Inspectors noted that residents seemed more relaxed and were treated with respect. They highlighted the personalized care approach, ensuring everyone’s needs were met without unnecessary restrictions.

Cornwall Council’s Cllr Andy Virr praised the staff’s efforts, calling the improvement an excellent result. He stressed the importance of good care for residents and how this success can inspire growth in Cornwall’s care sector.
