A car crashed onto tracks in Salford, Manchester, causing travel chaos. Driver arrested; recovery underway.
Train lines from Newton-le-Willows to Manchester are closed. Trains between Wigan and Manchester are also affected, resulting in the cancellation of many train services.
Police responded to Regent Road around 2 AM following reports of a car crashing onto the railway near the roundabout. A man in his 30s was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The man was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. A police scene remains in place on Regent Road, with officers collaborating with railway police and Network Rail. The police expressed gratitude for the public’s patience.
The process of removing the car from the tracks is underway, and repairs to the damage are scheduled for this afternoon. Footage showed police at the track as recovery crews worked below, with an officer reporting that crews “flipped” the car.
A recovery vehicle pulled the car along the tracks, followed by recovery teams in bright clothing. Shortly after, both the vehicle and the damaged car were removed from sight.
The car has now been lifted off the tracks and loaded onto a flat-bed truck. Recovery crews will remain at the scene to clear debris and ensure the tracks are safe for operation.
