Truro: Got the January blues? You should check out Hairspray at Hall for Cornwall. This musical is bursting with color and energy. It’s just what you need to brighten your mood.

Based on the 1988 film, this show is all about acceptance. Set in 1962 Baltimore, it follows Tracy Turnblad, a girl who dreams of dancing on a popular TV show. Tracy doesn’t fit the typical beauty standard, but she wins a spot on the show and becomes a star.

As she rises to fame, Tracy fights for change, pushing for black performers to be included on TV. The music is a fun mix of 60s vibes, with catchy songs that you’ll want to sing along to. The humor is big and bold, and the characters are larger than life.

This production nails it. Brenda Edwards, known for her role in Hairspray, is directing for the first time. The cast is young and fresh, with some new faces. Even without big names, the talent shines through.

Katie Brace steals the show as Tracy, bringing so much joy to her role. Michelle Ndegwa is a powerhouse as Motormouth Maybelle, delivering a stunning performance that earned her a standing ovation.

Neil Hurst is fantastic as Tracy’s mom, Edna. He brings both humor and heart to the role. Together with Dermot Canavan as Wilbur, they create a memorable duo.

While it may not be the best Hairspray I’ve seen, it’s still a great night out. Some parts could use a little more energy, but it’s definitely worth your time, especially when you need a pick-me-up.
