They might tear down a pub in Arnold. It’s the Friar Tuck, on Gedling Road. They want to build flats for older people. There would be 51 apartments for those over 60. The plans include gardens and parking. A decision is coming soon.

Greene King owns the pub now. It opened in 1958. Home Brewery Company built it. The new flats have one or two bedrooms, and there would be a garden with trees.

McCarthy Stone wants to build this. They asked for permission in August 2024. They run many retirement homes around the UK; West Bridgford and Mapperley have some already.

The council planning group decides. They will approve or reject the plan. Locals worry about safety on the roads. They also think the building is too big, and parking and flooding are other concerns.

People want to keep the old pub. Some say the flats won’t help locals. They also worry about the loss of the pub, as it serves as a place in the community.

The flats would be three stories high, forming an L-shape. They will design it to fit in. There would be a lounge for everyone, and big gardens would make it attractive.

There would be fewer parking spots; the plan includes 20 spaces. Currently, there are 44. However, the plan adds disability and scooter spaces.

The Council thinks it should go ahead. They made agreements with McCarthy Stone. Five flats should have lower rents, and another five should be shared ownership. This helps people buy homes easier, and people who cannot afford all costs benefit.

The council needs to meet housing goals. The government says all councils must do this. McCarthy Stone must help fund a bus stop and pay £27,000 to the NHS to cover new patients in the area, as local doctors’ offices need more help.
